RETIREMENT
Dr
Paul O'Flanagan is due to retire from Appletree Medical
Practice on the 1st May 2008.
Over
the past 31 years, living and working in Duffield, he has become
a highly valued and cherished part of the Community, and our Team
at Appletree Medical Practice. Dr O'Flanagan has made a huge contribution
to both General Practice and our Surgery.
Dr
O'Flanagan was born in Derby . At the age of 11 he went to school
in Ireland followed by Trinity College Medical School . This was
then followed by a 3 year training course for General Practice in
Derby . On completion of this course, he worked in Sutton Coldfield
for a year.
However,
whilst living down there he found that he and his wife were always
driving back up to Derbyshire to see friends, or to go walking.
And
so, in 1977, they moved back to Derby which is when he joined the
Practice here in Duffield. Some of you will remember that he worked
with Dr Mason in his house. The hallway was the waiting room and
Dr Mason's wife was the sole receptionist.
Eventually
the premises in Duffield House became vacant and Dr O'Flanagan,
Dr Leyland and Dr Stevens moved in. Fourteen year's ago they joined
together with Dr Brentnall and Dr Ward, and nine year's ago all
the Doctors moved into our current premises.
During
this time Dr O'Flanagan became the course organiser in Derby where
he had done his training. When appointed, he was checking the paperwork
and found his own original letter of application! Compared to the
applications they were then getting, he wouldn't have given himself
an interview!! He also worked with the Royal College of GPs in their
local faculty.
Over
the years he was Secretary, Chairman and finally Provost. He has
also worked with the Health Authority, Chairing the Quality in Care
Group and has worked for the Health Ombudsman.
In
the meantime, his wife was bringing up their two children.
He
is a very talented photographer and has displayed several of his
pictures at the Surgery, which has brought pleasure to many of our
staff and patients. Photography is a recent interest and he also
enjoys playing golf and chess.
So
retirement will mean a change of roles, as he will be doing the
housework and cooking, while his wife continues to work!
On
behalf of our Team at Appletree Medical Practice, and Dr O'Flanagan's
patients, we would like to sincerely thank Dr O'Flanagan for all
of his help, support and guidance, and to wish him every happiness
in the years to come.
