PALS

Information and support available via PALS for Carers of

People with Mental Health Problems

We would like to bring your attention to the information and support that PALS can offer to carers of people with mental health problems.  We can also provide information and support for mental health service users and in relation to learning disabilities.

Information

PALS has an extensive information system, and what we don't know we can find out!  We cover the whole of Derbyshire, and can provide information relevant to a particular geographic area if needed.  Some examples of information we hold are:

  • Support groups and befriending schemes for carers
  • Advocacy projects
  • Carers' forums
  • Carers' rights and benefits and specialist organisations who can help with these
  • Processes which affect carers, such as carers' assessments and the Care Programme Approach
  • Mental Health legislation, and how this relates to carers
  • Respite care
  • Care Homes
  • Information on particular mental health conditions such as dementia, depression, personality disorder, etc
  • Information on medication
  • Relevant websites and online facilities
  • Information on travel costs

Carer Support Service

This is a service provided across Derbyshire by Making Space, and you may wish to get in touch with them directly.  They can provide information, advice and advocacy to carers and families of adults with mental health problems.  They have Carer Support Co-ordinators for the different regions across Derbyshire who may be able to provide practical help or someone to talk to.  They will respond to carers' needs and work alongside multi-disciplinary teams as necessary.  To access this service directly, contact the Area Manager, Dawn Longden-Whiting, on: 01629 55592 or 07894 594271.

Support and Liaison

PALS also offers one-to-one support to help carers deal with particular issues or concerns.  For instance if they do not feel involved in arrangements made for the person they care for or if relationships with staff have broken down.  We offer a confidential service tailored to each client's needs, and will refer on to other services (for instance independent advocacy) where this is appropriate.

Carer Booklet

There is an excellent booklet produced by the Derbyshire Mental Health Services Trust called Information and Support for friends, families and partners of people with mental health problems .  This has recently been updated and gives information on mental health services, carers' assessments, carers' rights, mental health legislation, and local support groups and organisations.
